Anime - How it portrays women and how it affects its female viewers

I am working on a multi-genre project about women in anime and how females view and connect with these characters.
So I have 4 poll questions, each with the same list of 15 women.
Please take a moment to at least fill out the poll.
Also, please note that I only would like females to answer this - I'm specifically looking at how anime affects women.

(Sorry about a lot of repeat anime, but I tried to use series that the majority of people would know)

Edit: I am sorry I spelled Kagome's name wrong. I'll blame lack of sleep. Anyways, as far as I can tell, I can't edit the poll. ;_;

Edit 2: Its been pointed out that some people are having trouble answering because who they want is not on the list. I chose this list based on trying to have a wide (but still limited) varieties of types of anime girls. I'm not exactly looking to see if you feel like Winry because of her exact plot situation, but more because of the personality/character traits that you think she represents, whatever you might think she represents. If you know at least probably 12 of the characters/shows, then you are probably okay to answer.

Also, if you could please answer the first two questions from the list, then if you feel the need to kind of "write" in your answer in the comments for the last two, thats okay. I'd prefer from the list, but if you have a strong need not to, alright.

And while I am compiling and looking at these results, I will being stating that this was from a specific list - not open ended - so these characters may not be who the reader ultimately connects with, given a choice of every single anime out there.

I would also appreciate it if you would comment on why you chose your answer, like “I feel like connected to Ryoko because I’m in love with this guy, and I keep having to fight this obnoxious girl over him.” Or “I can’t understand Excel and why she is so crazy, I don’t think I’m anything like her.” Or even, “I’m the mother figure to all my friends, so I can really understand how Trisha feels, plus my boyfriend abandoned me to go off looking for something that’s never really been answered.”

If you would like to make the distinction that your answer is only applicable towards the anime or manga version specifically, please do.

Since this is for class, I would appreciate if everyone on my friends list could pimp this off on their lj. My goal is to get at least 100 responses, so that I can have a wide variety of data for my project.

Edit: I am sorry I spelled Kagome's name wrong. I'll blame lack of sleep. Anyways, as far as I can tell, I can't edit the poll. ;_;

I connect with Winry, at least the anime version (haven't read the manga), because, despite being cute (one thing I don't connect with, heh), she has little to no Annoying Female Crap: for one thing, she's one of the few on the list free from the curse of the Requisate Love Interest. Neither, however, is she cold or heartless. She cares deeply for the Elric brothers in a sisterly, platonic way that you really don't see acknowledged in any sort of media all that often.

I don't connect with Yui. (Note: I've only read the manga up to volume 8 or so.) What happened to her was horrible, but I can't emphasize with someone who would turn on people like that.

I pout that I admire Excel, and I wasn't kidding ;) Love-interes-obssession is usually annoying, but she doesn't just sit around and moon about how much she wuvs him and how he never notices her. She goes out and *does* something. Okay, so it's usually something like murdering a manga artist, but still. Also, you've got to be impressed by that kind of determination.

I would like to be Ryoko because, if you're going to go all moony over a boy, it might as well be a nice one with a magic sword. But mostly because she can fly and she's a space pirate.
I don't think I can answer your poll because, although I'm familiar with a good deal of those animes, I'm not familiar than them all. My answers wouldn't mean much; you couldn't say that I'm most/least connected to a particular type of character because maybe I'd be more/less connected to another one if I was familiar with her.

Sorry.
Okay, of the list I don't know Ryoko or Orihime.

I picked Lina for the first question because she reflects my personality. She says what I'd like to say and she has the firepower to get away with it.

I picked Miki for the second question because I found her irritating. Tohru runs a close second because I found her too passive and accomodating.

I picked Sango for the third question because she's one of the rare anime females who gets to fight on equal terms with the males. She's also strong without losing her femeninity, self-sacrificing, emotionally mature, and independent.

I picked Amelia for the fourth question because... well, she's a princess and gets to kick butt too. :)
First answer Excel for obvious reasons!
Second answer Trisha 'cause she's like... super not-me!
Last two answers Integra for being BAD. ASS.
All from anime versions.

1. Winry Rockbell - She's the closest thing to a strong willed geek in the list. :) The fact that she's physically strong as well is a bonus.

2. Trisha Elric - She really doesn't get much development in the anime, she's the Good Mother that stays home and raises her kids while waiting for her husband to get back from no-one-seems-to-know-where. She hides her illness and basically all of her thoughts other than "I love my boys" and "my husband is a good man." I don't think you could find an adult woman in anime that I have less in common with.

3. Integra Hellsing - A strong, adult, woman in charge of a paramilitary organization. What's not to admire? And she got there by her own will and efforts (some may say that it's Alucard that got her there but she had to free him and gain control of him first, as a child even.)

4. Winry Rockbell - She's got herself a bright career going already as a teenager and while life isn't all roses she's doing okay. I certainly wouldn't mind being 15 again and stacked the second time around. ;)
I'm not female, just curious about a few things here:

1) How did you choose those 15 characters out of the hundreds availabe?

2) Multi-genre as in giant robot, fantasy, romance, etc?
actually, multi-genre is my teachers definition for our class - such as drawing, short story, magazine cover, ads, collage, articles, press kit, song lyrics, etc.

I am looking at multiple genre's though, and the women in them.

I tried to pick a variety of differnt character archetypes, from shows that I'm familiar with and that I thought a variety of women would be familiar with. I also asked some friends for suggestions on who to include or not include, but mostly, I tried to find characters that I thought a lot of people would at least know a bit about.
Sent here via beccastareyes's journal.

1. Winry. She's deeply dedicated to the small part of the universe that is "hers", be it her work as an automail mechanic, or to the people that she loves.

2. Amelia. Well, I'm not a princess and I'm not that idealistic. Seriously don't know how she does it.

3. Integra. She controls a VAMPIRE. And an entire secret organization, and does it in style and with complete control. There's nothing that woman can't do.

4. Sango is just...amazing. Able to kick ass, and able to be domestic. She is smart, sexy and incredibly well-rounded. Everyone should be able to be like her (of course, that is excluding the typical anime uber-angst. No one should have that).
I feel connected to Integral because she is strong willed.

I feel least connected to Kagome because she is too weak.

I admire Ryoko because she has a free spirit, and even though she is hurt emotionally, she can laugh it off and be strong about it in the end.

I would love to be Integral because she is the embodiment of power in a woman. She has the No Life King as a servant and can make the Round Table shake in fear.
Bounced over here from fandom_lounge.

I'm most like Excel because the concept of "segues" is completely foreign to me.
I'm least like Trisha because I have all the maternal instinct of a rock and no patience whatsoever.
I think Integra's kickass and deals remarkably well with some incredibly tough situations and insane subordinates and doesn't take crap from anyone.
I've only seen the animes for all characters I ended up picking, and I was unfamiliar with some of the ones on the list. (For the record, the characters I DIDN'T know were Integra, Miyu, and Tohru.)

I feel most connected with Winry because... I guess because she's friends with Ed and Al, and I tend to ship best friend couples (probably cause I married mine). That and because she maintains a balance of not taking any crap from them (well, mostly from Ed), and also being there for them. She just seems... comforting.

And least connected with was hard. I put Excel because she struck me as the right answer before I stopped to think about it, but it was a close call between her and Trisha Elric and Yui. But I feel like I know a lot less about those two. Anyway, I picked Excel because, while I can relate to her messing up her missions and being starving all the time, she also does a lot of crazy things and is WAY... what's the word? Over the top? Extreme? Yeah, extreme. Loud and extreme and very inobservant (though also very funny and relatable to).

The one I admire most was hard, too, because I admire a lot of them. But I picked Lina because she does what she wants, is kind of violent, and eats a lot... It's been a while since I saw the show, and I haven't seen that much of it, but I remember admiring her. She also has a lot of self-confidence, and not necessarily because she does anything great, but just because she's her.

And for the one I'd most like to be, I picked Ryoko because Ryoko is a kick-ass space pirate! With feelings! I don't envy her her rivalry with Aieka (I hope I'm spelling that right--it's been a while) over Tenchi (and I think Ryoko needs Tenchi emotionally way more than Aieka does), but she holds her own pretty good and is way cool and bold.

I'd post your poll on my journal, but, sadly, you and Tye are the only ones that are into anime and manga, and he's a boy.

I wanted to answer this but I stumbled on the first question because I found no one I relate to from the series I know, and aren't very familiar with the other series. I think this might affect the accuracy of your result, because some people might be choosing characters who don't affect them the most, but only the one that affects them in a title they know. ^^;
Yeah, I'm aware of that - but if I had just left the answer blanks open, I'd have no real way to compare the data... besides, its a pretty un-scientific poll. If you'd like to post names from other animes, you can, but I'm not sure if it will actually make it into my final project.
Linked from over on JF, hope you don't mind me responding. ^^;

I feel most connected with Winry (anime version, at least). She's a strong character with a good sense of her own morals and reasons for what she does. She doesn't let herself be pushed around. She's also lost her parents; while mine are still physically here, there's no longer that connection with them. Like her, I'm also closer to my friends than my own family.

I feel least connected with Deedlit (in the original OVA) -- an initially strong and independent character, if a bit overconfident in herself at times, who could hold her own. Then, suddenly, her world centres on Parn and she loses her individuality. It's difficult to explain just how much that alienated the character from me.

I most admire Orihime. She's so completely her own person, an individual above and beyond the cast of unique characters in Bleach. She has a clearly defined "self" that she won't compromise for others; at the same time, she's a compassionate and sympathetic young woman who cares deeply for her friends.

I would most like to be Winry -- to have that sort of devotion and perseverance to so excel in her chosen field, to be that strong while remaining in touch with her emotions.
You'll notice I only answered two questions.

I feel the least connected to Winry for her spoiled-brat behaviour through most of the anime - it's only after she's no longer around Ed and Al and is around Sheska that she starts turning into someone remotely likeable.

Out of the offered choices, I admire Amelia a hell of a lot for how optimistic and kind-hearted she remains despite her family being one hell of a dysfunctional mess.

The female I feel the most connected with is Filia ul Copt, and the one I would most like to be like is Riza Hawkeye. They're not on your list and I don't care to settle for an answer which would be untrue for me.
... Riza. I knew I forgot someone I ment to include. Well, I was thinking about putting both her and Izumi on, but then FMA was getting a lot of representation on the list.

Thats fine though, I think I might include a little bit of "Other" Section on my study.
::HI I'M YUUO AND I'M TOO LAZY TO LOG OUT OF WINRY'S ACCOUNT WUT::

I think Integra because of her sense of honor and duty, and her loyalty to that duty. Obviously, I'm sure I differ on what I consider my duty, but duty is duty, and it's unique to each person.

Second one was harder to answer, but despite knowing fairly little about Inu Yasha, I'm definitely gonna have to say I don't connect with Kagome at all. There's just something that sincerely grates on me about her.

I admire Trisha the most- as someone said, sure, we don't see terribly much of her outside of the roles of "mother" and "abandoned but devoted wife" however, given her situation, given the circumstances, and given the resources that would've been available to her, I think she was an extraordinarily patient and strong woman to be able to do that. I actually have a lot of respect for any parents that are truly good parents, and especially for ones that do it alone. And given what a handful Ed and Al probably were? Plus, I'm sure she did her fair share of taking care of Winry, given that she and the boys were as much Winry's family as Pinako and her son and daughter-in-law were. So yeah, lots of respect for how patient and gentle and kind she obviously was. I wish I had half that strength.

GOD I WISH I WERE AS AWESOMELY BADASS AS LINA. Seriously, she's fast-witted, she's a good fighter, a genius with spellcasting, a shrewd and clever businesswoman, and god is that girl ever loyal. Sure, she has a bad temper, but everyone has their quirks and flaws, and ignoring the exaggeration of that temper for the sake of comedy, it's really not anything that hinders or terribly affects how she can interact and get along with the rest of humanity. And her strength of convictions = for the win.
You need to get on AIM and talk to me ^_^
I sent off a envelope with more mail yesterday, and some FMA stickers, since that was the only cute small thing I had around the house to try to cheer you up.

I connect with Orihime since we're rather similar in personality and, in a sense, in looks (I'm also big-chested).

I can't connect ith Ryouko since I consider her the Poster Girl for those Girls Who Are Supposed To Be STRONG And End Up As Utter Rude GRRRRRL Bitches. I CAN'T stand those characters that prove they're strong by being bitchy and self-centered... specially to other girls (remember how she treated Sakuya in Shin TM? EW.)

I admire Tohru since she's quiet and sweet, yet manages to help so many people to heal their hearts. *That* is real strength.

I want to be more like Orihime since she's her own person , strong without being bitchy, a kickass healer and so pretty...

My 2 cents.
